Grocery Spending for May 2015

Happy June all! Well, it's that time again. Time for a monthly report on grocery spending in our house. The grand tally came to $363.64. All those groceries are pictured above.(you can click on the pictures to make them larger) As you can see there are a lot of cleaning products and bbq sauce. Combining coupons and money saving apps these were all money makers. So, that means some of my grocery spending this month has been covered by this! In case you are interested here's a breakdown by store spending.
Walmart made $128.44 profit
Rona made $54.15 profit
Independent $26.40
Quality Greens $7.96
IGA $4.34
Cooper's $16.60
Costco $110.83
Save On $73.75
Safeway $36.60(got 162 AM which will equal $17.05 cash)
Superstore $114.16
Shoppers $155.59(cashed in $100 worth of points and made 97885 points this month, which will be worth $206.07 in groceries)
June's spending will probably be higher as we have another adult, gluten free, dairy free eater living with us from now on. Being accountable by having to post this is quite motivating so I hope I can keep the costs down.As you can see I have some cashable points stocked up which I could use at Safeway or Shoppers to stretch my budget further. Want to see what's on sale and where daily? Follow me on Instagram where I post much more regularly. @savingyourhardearnedmoney

Gluten Free Naan Bread, Bob's All Purpose Flour, and Saving Money on Meat

blog 033
A few posts ago I shared with you that my hubby has Celiac disease. His first food worry was naan bread, he would miss naan bread. I have learned that gluten free baking all comes down to the flour. My friend, Jackie, told me their favorite flour is Bob's All Purpose flour. I haven't had the easiest time finding it, when I did it was $8-$10 for 623 g! This week I found it at Target for $3.99! and they had the spend $50 get a $10 gift card deal!
Happy Dance!
The original recipe for this bread is here.
Naan Bread
3/4 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp yeast
Mix sugar and water and sprinkle yeast on top. Leave for 10 minutes.
2 1/4 cup- 2 1/2 cup Bob's All Purpose Flour
1 1/4 tsp xanathan gum
1/8 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
Mix all the dry together
2 Tbsp olive oil
3 Tbsp yogurt
Mix the yeast and liquids together.
Add the liquids to the dry ingredients in the Kitchenaid mixer. Using the dough hook mix, scraping the sides. Mix just until it comes together.
Cover with a tea towel and place somewhere warm for 1-3 hours.
Sprinkle some flour on your working surface. Press the dough down, sprinkling the top of it with flour. Cut with a sharp knife into squares.
blog 035
Part of the secret to this bread's success is using a cast iron pan with a lid.
Heat it on high. Using a bowl of water sprinkle some water on the dough and add pieces to the cast iron pan. Put the timer on for 1 minute. Flip them and then cook the other side for one minute.
Brush them with melted butter. Serve hot.
blog 036
1 minute on each side. They should have a charred look to them.

This Week's Sales

mexico 2010 073
I had to use this Mexico picture today....
This Week's Sales
Each week I like to post the best deals from the common flyers and stores. Why? Well, one of the best ways to slash your grocery bill is to only buy things that are on sale. It means menu planning according to what's on sale. Where we live it is quite easy to do all the main stores in a fairly short loop. If there is a store that has an item I want that's off the beaten path I try and put it in with other errands in that area. I am really enjoying the Reebee flyer app as I can see the upcoming week's flyers on Thursday and so straddle the 2 weeks to get the best possible deals. Along with the week's sales I always look for the clearance and marked down foods to stretch things even further.

This Week's Sales and I've Got Lots of Bananas!

How's your summer going? Mine's great! It's been hot...which I love...a lot! I have been slacking on the weekly sales because I'm outside....always, every minute it's sunny if I can. I need sun lots of sun. My friend told me we are sun hoarders....yes...my name is Sue, I am a sun hoarded. So, right now I have the lap top in the shade while keeping my self in the sun. Just my hands are shady, it's perfect. I can write for long periods of time like this...sorry...Anyways, enough of that. Here's what happened this week. My sister in law and I took a trip to Quality Greens to get blueberries..10lbs for $9.99. While we were there we looked in the clearance, of course. We found this box of bananas. $7. I asked the cashier if she would entertain me and weigh it. Almost 27lbs... .26/lb! There were some nice yellow ones in their too! We split the box and each paid $3.50. What did I do with all those bananas you ask?
2013-07-16 11.29.16
Even my food pics need to be done outside now.
2013-07-17 12.42.13
Some of them I just peeled and put straight into Ziplocs to freeze. I will use them for smoothies and banana bread and muffins.
2013-07-17 12.24.58
The ones that  are spotted are sweetest and best for drying. I sliced them quite thin and dried them. It took about 8 hours.
2013-07-17 12.24.53
I kept some of the ripe ones and made a few loaves of America's Test Kitchen Banana Bread. It's the best recipe I have found so far! Note to self. I need to blog the recipe!
