This Week's Sales

These beautiful grosbeaks came to visit again this week!

They come every year at this time, but only for a short while.

The grosbeaks seem to not mind the clicking of the camera as I take a million pictures of them. The hummingbirds, however, are very noise sensitive! I was holding very still and standing next to the feeders, snapping grosbeak pictures, when a hummingbird flew SOOOO close to my face, I couldn't even move the camera without hitting him! Needless to say I didn't get a picture then, but here's one of the grosbeak posing, while the hummer feeds!

Posing.....

I only added a few of the MANY pictures I took.....don't you love digital cameras!

Ok, to the business at hand...this week's deals!

Travelling Inexpensively

Today I got this deal from FabFind. It was 2 flights for $88, and it sounded too good to be true. So, I checked it out. Here's what I found.
1. The travel and accommodations need to be booked through One Stop Travel
2. You have until May 22,2014 to use it
3.You must book their accommodations for a minimum of 7-14 days(their website has the days required listed according to the destination)
Valid for round-trip airfare for two adults to over 50 destinations
Depart from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg, or Calgary
Destinations include Las Vegas, Hawaii, New York City, Los Angeles, Cancun, and more
Choose from 3 - 5 star hotels including Hyatt, Hilton, Westin, and Sheraton properties

So, I decided to do some comparing of prices. We are presently saving for a 20 year wedding anniversary trip for the two of us to go to Maui. When I followed their link I found the minimum stay was 8 days for Maui. The Maui hotel (there was just one)was $360/night. So, with taxes it would be $3266.
Flights are only to Oahu! So, one would have to get a flight from Oahu to Maui!($321 return)
Taxes and airport fees on the regular price of a flight would be $247.34 for 2. So, air would be $88 +$247.34 + $321=$656.34
Now, we like to book our flights whenever it's cheapest and typically we prefer to go in the winter. If you have plans to go to the Hawaiian islands and can wait to book, booking in November is typically the best time to get sales for winter flights, but we start watching in September and have found them on sale even then(for winter travel). Right now on west-jet there are flights going out beginning of June for $540 return all taxes in. Of course the more flexible you can be with your dates the better the deal you can get.
So, to book our flights ourselves let's say we spent $600 each. Total $1200.
Now, accommodations, I checked on VBRO (we used VBRO for our Oahu trip) and a condo(which we prefer so we can cook some of our own meals, the Maui hotel has only a fridge) is $1190 high season for a week. So, for the same 8 days it would be $1548.
So, altogether for the Deal it would be $3266 accommodations + $656.43 flight +(???food) =$3922.43( + food)
Do it yourself is $1200 flights + $1548 accommodations =$2748
Not getting the deal would save us $1174! and that's not factoring in restaurant meal savings!
They also have this deal for all inclusive too, but again it seems much less expensive to book through Trip Central .
We are having fun dreaming and scheming to make our special trip fun and to stay within our budget. When we went to Oahu in 2010 we were able to leave with all the money saved and truly enjoy our paid for vacation, as well as all the excitement that went into planning!
Now, you may find that you can make this deal worthwhile for your destination. Just be sure to figure out all the angles...as there are always angles and fine print! Drop me a line for how you save on travel....I'd love to hear!!!

Best Deal On Toilet Paper Yet!!!

This week at Costco.

This Toilet Paper has a $5 off coupon! This package has 36 rolls which have 480 sheets/roll. That's 17280 sheets for $19.99-$5=$14.99. Divide the cost, $14.99 by the sheets and you get .000867/roll!!!! That's the cheapest I have seen it! Sales ends Sunday usually.
Here's a link to an older post in regards to tp. If you want to see them all just type in toilet paper in the search bar in the upper left corner of my blog, right beside the orange B and magnifying glass.

They figure out the price in square meters??? Yikes!

Here's a few other things I was able to take pictures of.

Yummy flax seed only $3.69!

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie ATK Easy!

The rhubarb is ready....it's a wonderful time of year!

Time to make some Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie!
This is the America's Test Kitchen recipe...except I cheat on the pie crust! :)  This recipe takes about 2 hours from beginning to end because of the 1 hour macerating and 50 minute baking time.
You need 4 stalks of rhubarb cut up.

You need 4 cups strawberries cut into quarters.

Add one cup of sugar and let macerate....for one hour, to draw some of the liquid out to avoid soggy pie syndrome!

This is a really easy recipe....I just have to remember to add in an hour for macerating!

Here's my "not made from scratch cause I tried that and this is easier" solution. I used a coupon...so it's ok..

Allow your professionally made crusts to thaw at room temperature.

There is lots of liquid that is left behind after draining your fruit thoroughly.

Keep 1/4 cup of the liquid.

Get the zest of an orange if you want(this is optional). You need 1 tsp.

Seems this box cost $1.48(a little of my grandpa coming out....).
You need 2 Tbsp cornstarch.

1/2 tsp vanilla(mine's from Mexico...thanks Lynn!)

Add orange zest, cornstarch, and vanilla, along with 1/4 cup reserved liquid to the fruit.

Put fruit into pie crust.

Top with second crust and press along the edges. The directions say to make 8 vent holes(oops!)

Brush crust with the white from one egg.

Sprinkle with 1 Tbsp sugar.

Bake at 425 for 25 minutes(place on a cookie sheet to save your oven) then rotate the baking sheet and reduce oven temperature to 375 and cook until golden brown, 25-30 minutes.

The directions say to let cool for 2 hours....ummm didn't happen in my house, but good luck!

I don't like pie, but this was so good.....Strawberries and rhubarb, is there a better combination????
