Free Makeup

Would you like to try some make up, for free? Physician's Formula has 6 mail in rebates right now, 2 of them are for a full price rebate! The fine print is:

1. Make sure the makeup has this full price rebate sticker as you will need to mail it in.

2.Purchases must be made by Nov 30, 2011 and post marked no later than Dec 15, 2011

3. Each item requires a seperate receipt, this is very important.(I spoke with someone at Physician's Formula)

4. You must mail in your original receipt.
5. You must print off and mail in the rebate forms here
6. Take note of the mailing information being different for each offer(PF-10, PF -13), this leads me to believe you must mail in each one seperately.
7. I spoke with someone at Physician's Formula and they said you can use all 6 offers, just seperate receipts.
This makeup is in the $15-$20 range per item. Those of you who enjoy getting 20X the points at Shoppers could combine one of these purchases with a 20X the points day, like today! The minimum you have to spend today is $50, so the mascara, which is $17.99, is a good start!

I've got lots of tomatoes......

One of my favorite things is salsa. This week we ran out of my store bought stock pile(I keep checking the cold room as I was sure I had enough to last the winter!). For me and hubby, salsa is kind of like ketchup is for other people. We love to add it to most everything. So, we decided to make some. For some reason I thought salsa would be hard to make. It's not! It was very easy and can even be done while sipping a glass of wine! My friend and I put the ingredients into the food processor and viola! Chips and salsa, here we come! Now, as I have said before my blog is kind of like my memory for me. Often times a recipe isn't exactly what I want, so I modify it a little. For this America's Test Kitchen recipe(you can click on the recipe to enlarge it) I would change a couple of things.
One, we used way more jalapenos than the recipe called for, as we like it spicy.
Second, we did use canned tomatoes, but only because my frozen ones were frozen! Next time, I will thaw out my whole frozen tomatoes and use them(you can also use fresh, of course).
Third, I think peppers would be a nice addition, and lots of them as the chunkier the better as far as we are concerned!
We eat salsa with our home made pizza, with wraps, chips, and lots more. How about you? What do you like to pour salsa on???

I've got lots of.....potatoes

I was thinking about how to combine recipes, bulk buying and using up leftovers when the idea of a I've got lots of series came to me.
What if I write a blog for a particular recipe that uses up lots of some ingredient?
The picture to the left is pizza pockets in the making. Great if you have left over mashed potatoes!
Why mashed potatoes?
This dough is a refrigerator dough recipe that requires mashed potatoes. (I am kind of on a flax/wheat germ kick and I really enjoy adding them to my baking. Here I substituted 3/4 cup of flour for the same amount of flax and wheat germ combined).
Pizza Pockets
Take refrigerator dough out of the fridge and let rise on the counter.
Roll out dough and cut into pieces.
Spread a small amount of pizza sauce, or whatever sauce you fancy.
Add small pieces of meat, peppers, tomatoes....
Sprinkle on some cheese...
Close them up and bake for about 20minutes 400 degrees.
I referenced this dough and it's recipe in a previous post
In the post I made cinnamon buns with the dough. You can also make bread sticks or cloverleaf buns, as well as hot dog wraps. The dough keeps in your fridge for up to 5 days and will make about 3 regular size recipes of cinnamon buns, pizza pockets, buns..etc. It's really handy to have it ready in the fridge. I keep it in an ice cream bucket.

Reading the Fine Print

It was brought to my attention that the buy $50 and get a $10 gift card promo at Shoppers does not work the same way as their 20X the points events. At a 20X the points event you can spend whatever their set amount is, usually $50-$75, and then at the end all your coupons will be applied and you can bring your total down to equal way less than the minimum. With this gift card promotion the fine print says after discounts and redemptions(which must mean coupons).Just thought I'd clarify for those of you who subscribe to my blog you would have got my shopping list, but the coupon part won't work for this promo. (I have edited it from the blog now). A lesson for me in studying the fine print!

Pork Loin at Save On Foods

I thought I'd show you the pork loin that's on sale for $1.78/lb at Save On Foods this week. It seems when they have great deals on roasts, whether beef of pork, they are in these gigantic tubes! So, I just bring them home and slice them up(Ziploc freezer bags are on sale at Costco this week!).
Below is the nicely sliced up boneless pork loin roasts. I have bought this before and it's wonderful done in a roaster with a little Montreal Steak Spice, potatoes and onion!
As you can see, I ended up with 9 roasts. The total cost was $35.42 for both big tubes, which means each roast costs just under $4! Maybe you can slip some into your freezer this week!

Mid Week Sales

Here's the yummy fruits and veggies on sale! Nice that peppers are so cheap. Did you know that you can cut them up, put them on a cookie sheet, throw them in a Ziploc and have them frozen and ready for stir frys, wraps, etc?!
It's so nice to have them on hand!
By the looks of the sales here, I need some more feta cheese! I usually buy it at Costco in the 1Kg size. It lasts a year in the fridge(by the dates on the container), but not at our house! The best time to buy it has been May and June. Regularly it is $11.99, but in May it has gone down to $9.69 and in June $8.99!! I usually buy several!

Easy Cuban Bread

I have said it before, I'll say it again, I l have learned a lot from the Tightwad Gazette! I own the big huge, all 3 editions plus the bonus edition, which I bought for $19.95 years ago, and then I also have all the editions separately, which I have bought at garage sales or thrift stores. Why all these extra ones? I lend them out all the time! It makes me so happy to slide one of those books into some one's unsuspecting hands! It is full of simple recipes made from ingredients you actually have!!!!
This is Cuban Bread modified. I thought I'd add a little goodness to it. This is a great bread to use for dipping, with soups or stews. The key is it's fast. From start to finish it takes only 1 hour and 15 minutes, that's with rising time! The thing to remember with this recipe?? Start with a cold oven! This is the hardest part for me to remember, so I put it in bold for you!
Cuban Bread
5-6 cups all-purpose flour(you can substitute up to 1/2 the flour with whole wheat, what I did was a substituted a cup of flour for ground flax and wheatgerm)
2 Tbsp dry yeast
2 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp salt
2 cup hot water
1 Tbsp sesame or poppy seeds or oats
Mix 4 cups of the flour with the yeast, sugar, and salt. Pour in hot water and beat 100 strokes, or 3 minutes with a mixer. Stir in the remaining flour until the dough is no longer sticky. Knead 8 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with damp towel. Let rise 15 minutes.Punch down. Divide into 2 pieces, shape into 2 round loaves and place on baking sheet. Cut an X 1/2 inch deep on top with sharp knife. Brush with water and sprinkle with seeds or oats.(I actually didn't do this this time) Place on the middle shelf of a cold oven. Place a cake pan of hot water on the lowest shelf. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Bake 40-50 minutes until deep golden brown.

Twongo

Well, another deal I just stumbled upon thanks to a friend's email,is this group buying site called Twongo.

How does it work?

You sign up to get their daily deals and they send you an email telling you what the daily deal is. Here is a deal from today. If you click on the sign up link above you will get $5 and I will get $5 when you make your first purchase. I have seen great deals on this site and have benefited from getting their daily emails. The more people buy something the lower the price goes and you aren't charged until the deal ends. A word of caution the time left shown in the right hand corner, isn't always true. I think each deal is a limited quantity so if it sells out the deal is done. At Christmas there was a fantastic deal on Chapters gift cards on one of these daily deal sites and by the time I blogged and you went to buy it was gone! That's why it's better to get your own daily emails so you have a chance to get the deals.
I am happy that there is something for our city, you can check and see if Twongo is in your city by clicking on the Choose Your City at the top of the Twongo page.If it isn't in your city yet you can still join and they will start sending you the deals as soon as it is in your city. Hope this saves you some $$$$!

Big White Family Fun Day

Well, looks like this weekend is the weekend to ski! Big White has a Family Fun Day on Sunday, February 6th. Your lift ticket, tubing, and skating(skate rentals aren't included) are all included for $19.99 plus tax. Looks like you might need the coupon, call them to confirm.

Also, they have an accommodation deal where you buy 2 adult lift tickets at regular price and stay for free. You must call Big White to make reservations. 250-765-888

This coupon is in Feb 2, Capital News.
Maybe see you at the ski hill!

Jump Drive at Office Depot

I had to blog about this! This 2GB jump drive is $3 at the cash register at the Office Depot on Harvey! The one they have on sale in the flyer is 4GB for $8.49, so as you can see this is a way better deal!

Today Only Entertainment Book Sale

The entertainment book has this deal on their website right now. $20.11 plus free shipping and handling TODAY ONLY. That price is US dollars. The CAD is $1.0187 today.
When we went to Hawaii we ordered the one for Hawaii before we went. We knew we were going to lots of the places that were offered so we got our money back and a bit. Normally, it's not that great of a deal for us as we don't eat out much, but that being said, we do rent cars and the coupons for car rentals are great! It's also fun to pass on the coupons we don't need to others!
If you can't see yourself recovering your $20.11. You could wait until Spring when they go on for $10, usually May. Or wait until July when they usually go 2/$10!

Fruits and Veggies

Old Town Market has some nice deals on veggies! Looks like a salad with peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese and an oil and vinegar dressing is in my menu planning!
